Dealing with water in oils

It is possible that you may come across a system with murky oil. Oil becomes murky when it is contaminated with water above its saturation level. The saturation level is the amount of water that can dissolve in the oil's molecular chemistry . It can be presumed that if oil is cloudy it indicates that a unhealthy amount of water is present however it is common to find oil systems with murky oil greater than 1% (10,000 ppm) water when problems have occurred with leaks or unreliable water removal systems. The EASZ-1 online moisture level transmitter can be set to measure contaminations from 0-1% (10,000 ppm) and it also has other higher ranges that can be chosen through a dip fix selector.

Why you should monitor water levels in oil?

  • Excessive water levels in oil depletes some additives and reacts with others to form corrosive by-products which attack some metals.
  • Reduces lubricant film-strength, which leaves critical surfaces vulnerable to wear and corrosion.
  • Reduces filterability and clogs filters.
  • Increases air entrainment ability.
  • Increases the likelihood of cavitation occurring.

A number of factors need to be considered when selecting water contamination targets, including the type of oil system and reliability objectives for the equipment. It's always wise to control water contamination at the lowest levels that can reasonably be achieved, ideally to the lowest levels possible at the operating temperature.
